Each Term in
the dictionary is characterized by a main Name (that appears
in the alphabetical list of Terms), possibly
Equivalent Names, a Definition in which the Terms of the database
are hypertexted, coloured Schematic pictures, and a
short list of references (books, reviews, articles, databases,
documents from industry, etc...).
o "Search Term Names" looks for Terms whose Name :
* contains the entered text ("Contains this text" option);
* begins with the entered text ("Begins with this text (letter)"
option).
Please always use the singular version of words.
The "Search also in Equivalent Names" option performs the
search in both the Term Names and Equivalent Names.
o "Search Definitions" looks for Terms whose Definition contains
the entered text.
The " AND " and " OR " booleans can be used to combine several
searches, which means that these two words cannot
belong to any text to be searched.
Parentheses ( ) can be used to combine several pieces of text
with booleans, which implies that parentheses are forbidden
within any entered text. |
"Biology
Electronic Encyclopedia", or "Bee", is an online
biological dictionary which looks like a condensed biology
encyclopedia (available on the "beelib" site, at
www.beelib.com).
This illustrated biology dictionary aims at defining and illustrating
many life science Terms (words, expressions, acronyms, abbreviations)
used in Cell Biology (each item corresponds to a cell biology
article) and Molecular Biology ("Bee" appears as
a molecular biology dictionary, and even a simple molecular
biology encyclopedia).
The Bee biological dictionary provides a variety of biology
definitions written as biology articles, and relating to the
fields of Molecular biology and Cell biology.
Each biology definition
in the biology terms dictionary is characterized by the
main Name of the Term (that appears in the alphabetical
list of Terms), possibly Equivalent Names, a Definition
in which the Terms of the database are hypertexted, coloured
Schematic biology diagrams, and a short list of references
(books, reviews, articles, databases, documents from industry).
The biology Terms of the
Bee cell biology dictionary relate to the fundamental concepts
and essential processes involved in cell structure, activities,
life and death (a cell diagram is often presented in the
cell biology article), and the main technical approaches
available in Molecular Biology.
The Terms may come from fields as different as: Chemistry,
Biochemistry (Bee appears as a biochemistry dictionary,
in which each biochemistry definition relating to a precise
biochemistry topic is written as a short biochemistry article)
, Molecular Biology, Molecular Genetics (Bee is also built
as a simple genetics dictionary in which a genetics article
describes each genetics item), Physiology, Pharmacology,
Immunology, Virology ("Bee" is indeed a kind of
microbiology dictionary in which each item is written as
a short microbiology article).
Various thematic approaches have thus been used to select
the Terms to be defined: cell signaling, membrane and intracellular
cell receptors, virology, main biochemical compounds and
processes they control, principles of immunology, main molecular
biology techniques.
The Bee online biology encyclopedia
intends to constitute a computerized assistance to both
research and multi-level education, in the different fields
of Biology and medical applications (a human cell diagram
is often proposed in Beelib to illustrate medical terminology).
It can also constitute a useful tool for :
o spreading basic scientific knowledge via an online biology
dictionary;
o settling an international consensus around the scientific
terminology in Biology.
Indeed, the proliferation of new terms in scientific and
clinical fields which are highly descriptive makes it harder
and harder to control and understand the scientific and
technical terminology used in biomedical research, teaching
of biology and medicine, and clinical activities.
*************************************
In the cell biology dictionary
and molecular biology encyclopedia "Bee", the
Entries are presented in alphabetical order and described
by :
o a definition (between 4 and 40 lines), in which the Terms
belonging to the database are hypertexted to ease "surfing"
throughout the database.;
o equivalent terms or expressions;
o references in scientific books and databases;
o hand-made coloured figures, when such illustrations are
useful (a few movies have also been created).
